When Science is Applied to Advertising and Marketing

This is the third article in a series of the history of advertising and marketing. We pick up the story from when John E. Kennedy exited Lord and Thomas leaving Albert Lasker with the monumental task of replacing him.

1908 Kennedy must have been a hard act to follow.

But Lasker did replace him with a man who made an even greater overall contribution to the advertising world than Kennedy did.

Kennedys replacement was called Claude C. Hopkins.

And what a true pioneer he proved to be.

Hes the man who inaugurated free sampling, risk-free trials, money-back guarantees, market testing, and much more.

Hopkins agreed with Kennedy on the Salesmanship on Paper philosophy, but where Kennedy was a one idea man, Hopkins had many ideas.

Hopkins reckoned that just placing ads and seeing what happened was futile. Pure guesswork. He wanted to measure everything that he did.

And we should all be glad that he did.

Hopkins wrote only two books but both were classics. His first: Scientific Advertising written in 1923 contained manyof his secrets that he found with his testing techniques. These secrets are still as valid today.

His second book, written in 1927, was an autobiography called: My Life in Advertising. Many regard this as the best advertising book ever written.

All top marketers regard Hopkins first book as their copywriting how-to bible.

And the late advertising great, David Ogilvy, had this to say about Scientific Advertising: Nobody should be allowed to have anything to do with advertising until he has read Scientific Advertising seven times it completely changed my life.

Jay Abraham, known as Americas #1 marketing wizard, had this to say: Claude Hopkins is the master of them all. His influence has easily added over $6m to my personal income..and still counting.

Hopkins created ad campaigns for many major US companies that are still going strong today. Companies such as Palmolive, Pepsodent, and Quaker Oats.

One of his secret strategies for creating more turnover for his clients was that of pre-emptive strikes.

By this strategy, he used to tell a story of how things were done in an industry and thus educate the customers. Any competitor could have told the same story but didn’t. and whoever did so first, gained the edge.

Hopkins stated in his books that a large part of advertising done at the time was based on the concept of: “Buy My Product” or “Come into My Store.” Lots of advertisers today make this same mistake. Are you one of them?

Customers are not fooled by this. They want to know: “What’s in it for me?”

Hopkins knew this and used this psychology to grow Van Camp’s pork and bean business. After his research, Hopkins found that 94% of housewives were baking their own beans at home and only 6% were buying canned beans.

But Hopkins realized that everybody advertising canned beans merely stated: “Buy My Brand.” Nobody explained what the benefit of their product was.

An LCD Advertising Poster Excellent For Informercials

When firms look to the most recent, most innovative promotion device they will certainly be considering an LCD advertising poster due to the low investment costs

Advertising in the form of information are applied throughout the USA in the home shopping segment, now small to medium organizations can use the same methods to publicize sale products or overstocked products to probable buyers.

Now merchandise can be viewable and demonstrated to show how our lives will be enriched by possessing them, one company has been employing them for some time to advertise various products, the most current infomercial showed how we could not live without this tool that stored Wellington boots upside down and also allowed the customer an easy on and off with their boots, bearing in mind this December in the United Kingdom has been the worst for snow in the past 20 years, this tool sold out in the first week, proving that infomercials work.

How does a digital poster work?
The media on the digital poster was displaying several people who had been for a walk coming into the house and all apart from one individual was fighting taking their snow packed Wellington boots off. The man who wasnt struggling just put his heel in the tool and slid his foot out then did the same with the other boot and then picked the tool up that held the boots and he put them in the porch so the snow would drip off them and they would be fine (no cleaning) next time he needed the Wellington boots. was cleaned up easily. As you could see that the guard produced a barrier against the mud and wine so it could be moped up with a cloth.

The LCD poster is a standalone device having an advertising media player built into the display screen, all the ads are loaded onto a storage card and the dwell time set (how long the ad runs), so that when it finishes it loops round again.

Retail boutiques have been utilizing LCD posters for some time, to market the time and date their “super price beater” sale starts, presenting some of the designer clothing and handbags at a widely reduced price. Even food markets have been using digital posters to advertise and promote new additions to their food range, this way they can see how effective the marketing campaign was, if it wasnt they can change the media until they have a winning formula.

With these digital advertising displays the modern appearance to the customer shows how serious the business is in providing up to the minute informative information, now every business from a car accessory store to a beauty salon, all for a very low price, the return on the investment is said to be a matter of two to three months.

Firms who have fitted several digital posters are using some of them for advertising their goods and using some extra digital posters can create an additional income stream by selling advertising slots on the posters. With a normal advertisement costing $100 per week this is a win win situation as it is possibly the most cost effective direct marketing campaign possible and if 30 advertisers take the offer every month the owner of the digital posters can easily make an added $12,000 per month for little if any work.

Dmrc Advertising Is The Best Medium For Brand Promotion In Delhi Ncr

High Dwell Time

Even the media that can compete with the Delhi Metro in terms of costs cannot provide a dwell time as high as 10-20 minutes. These 10-20 minutes inside a well cooled, structured and highly maintained environment are invaluable for any advertiser. Advertisers would prefer to place their ads before viewers who are comfortably waiting for a metro train at any given chance.

Audiences in a Good Mood

The DMRC is one of the most accurate and punctual methods of transport. Any journey can be planned well and the commuters do not have to worry about the trains being late. Thus, a commuter waiting for a train at a metro station is essentially a carefree commuter in a leisurely mood. The Ad Displays have a much better scope of impressing the audience in such a situation.

Strategically Placed Sites for Better Viewing

The closeness, size, position, and the frequency of the displays in this medium can be conveniently planned in order to increase their impact. In other words, it is almost impossible to miss an Ad Display placed in a metro station and its platforms.

Scope for Localized Advertising

Localized Advertising is a prominent part of marketing strategies. Especially in the case of brands which need to deliver from or at a point of sale, Localized Advertising is often the top driver of sales. For example, let us take the example of a commuter looking for a travel agency in Kashmere Gate. Let us say he travels to the place using the metro. If he sees an ad for a certain travel agency while getting down at the Kashmere Gate Metro Station, he is most likely to head straight to its office.

With the metro now connecting a few areas of the NCR and about to connect the others, DMRC Advertising will continue rising in its stature as the most viable option for promotional campaigns. This is especially true in case of brands from sectors, like the entertainment industry, that need to target across all segments of audiences.

Lets Face It. There Is No Answer To The Advertising And Marketing Crisis!

Both Clients and advertising agencies are deluding themselves. Marketing has to accept there is no way out of its decline. For one blood-curdling moment it seemed that the marketing world had woken up to the fact that their preposterous industry had finally been caught in the act. Pepsi ,the world’s leader in advocating and implementing new-age marketing nonsense, and now paying the price for its foolish belief in the three-headed marketing monsters: “branding,” “engagement,” and “conversation.” (Here’s a tip for anyone left alive in the Pespi marketing department. There is one thing, and one thing only, that advertising is about — persuasion. All the rest is word games and chit chat. Got it?) Last week it was reported that after years of fighting Coke for first place in the soft drink category, Pepsi-Cola had fallen to third place.

The L.A. Times called it… “…a stunning fall from grace.” Pepsi-Cola and Diet Pepsi saw their U.S. sales volumes in 2010 fall sharply, by 4.8% and 5.2%, respectively… The U.S. soft drink market is about 74 billion dollars. Therefore a 5% drop in Pepsi market share (which is about 10%0 cost them well over $350 million on the Pepsi brand alone! The goal of advertising is to create a clear awareness of your company and its Unique Selling Proposition. Unfortunately, most advertisers evaluate their ads by the comments they hear from the people around them. The slickest, clearest, funniest, most creative and most different ads are the ones most likely to generate these comments. See the problem? When we confuse “response” with “results” we create “attention getting ads” which say absolutely nothing. The business owner is uniquely unqualified to see his company or his product objectively. He is on the inside, looking out, trying to describe himself to a person on the outside looking in. Its hard to read the label when youre inside the bottle. Too much product knowledge causes the business owner to answer questions that no one is asking. ThisLets Face it. There is no answer to the Advertising and Marketing Crisis!makes for extremely ineffective advertising.

Marketing has to accept there is no way out of its decline. The rot began when we chose never to take heed of Professor Ehrenbergs statements on advertising effectiveness! Because nothing has changed despite all the ballyhoo about Social Media, Facebook et al. Wherever ads appear, especially on Social Media, Ehrenbergs resolute focus on the facts what data actually tells us led him to challenge many a marketing bandwagon such as loyalty. You may wish to improve the brands performance by improving customer retention, he observed, but without a higher market penetration it just wont happen. His work on advertising effectiveness was equally challenging. He argued convincingly that there was no evidence that advertising persuades anybody to do anything; advertising can only ever be a weak force that improves brand recognition and/or jogs consumers memories. Ehrenbergs uncompromising insistence on staying only with the facts is probably why his work was so studiously ignored by so many sections of the marketing community. The consequences of this has been far more lasting than any recession could ever be. Slowly, very slowly, two opposing forces are massing and sooner or later they must clash. One, still in the ascendant but wobbling, is top-down-management, the imposed judgement of an international elite. Call this elite what you like, Marketing, New York Advertising, London Creative, Saatchi and Saatchi, WPP or a sneering cabal of all these elements. Its leadership is weak, its self-confidence beginning to falter. The other now stirring is bottom-up: the rising dissatisfaction of disillusioned shoppers, disillusioned by shoddy goods, misleading advertising and specifically shoddy service! The Marketing world fight shy of consulting it testifies only to their fear of the verdict. The current crisis leads us to look for someone to blame, something to postpone the unavoidable. We look away from something that stares us in the face, the imperium of Marketing and Advertising is over, never to return. Our predominance is gone. Our inheritance is diminished. We are humbled and will not be raised again. We have overstretched our resources and we have most certainly, been outspending our own budgets. Our output has been falling behind while our shopping habits have been racing ahead. Future Business historians will call these decades The Great Evasion! The zeitgeist of the turn-of-the-century Advertising and Marketing world was to believe and promote anyone who told us we could have it all, and to buy the marketing and advertising bullshit they designed for us. Marketing and Advertising are not the answers to our problems, and, in point of fact, they have been partially responsible for the problems we now face, there is no answer. To even think that we will emerge from all this into a sunlit marketing and advertising sea where we beat the rest of the world at their own game is pure fantasy!

Advertising Agencies Have To Adapt With New Media

Advertising agencies have dramatically changed over the last twenty years thanks to the Internet and online advertising. Most businesses realize the importance of getting online and using the hip new methods and processes associated with forms of Internet advertising.

Few could have imagined in the early 80s what role advertising agencies would take on today. The Internet has changed the way we live and do business. It has forever changed consumer habits. What was once the lifeblood of advertising, newspapers and magazines, is now on the decline and has evolved from direct response advertising to branding.

Advertising agencies have added such methods as search engine positioning, pay per click marketing and social media marketing to their arsenals. Not only do agencies develop video ads for television slots, they now create video ads for the internet and viral videos for YouTube.

Offline marketing has changed as well. Readership has dropped for many big newspapers and magazines. New services like transport ads have come into play. Even stationary billboards have gone high tech by playing full color video advertisements. There are more options today in offline advertising than ever before.

Advertising agencies have to create a larger variety of ads. They must design banner ads that are effective at getting clicks. They need to create videos that are accepted by social communities online that walk the fine line between advertising and entertainment.

Advertising agencies today have to be quick to adopt new trends since Internet media is constantly and rapidly changing. What works today may be ineffective next year.

Choosing the right advertising agency for your business will take a little work. You want to make sure you sign with a company that is on the cutting edge of adverting methods and not one that is stuck in the old methods of print media only.

It is more convenient for you if you sign with an ad agency that can handle your entire advertising campaign. They should be able to run PPC accounts, make YouTube videos and place print ads. It helps if they can design and create your ads for you. Having everything done by one company will help you stay organized and should save you money.

Look for an ad agency that has a strong reputation among its customers. View their portfolio of ads and go over their statistics. They should offer the ability to track and analyze the results you get from your ads as well.

Advertising costs must be cost effective no matter how you approach it. You need to be smart with your money and make sure the money you spend gets results in the form of a healthy return on your investment. That is why you need a strong agency that utilizes today’s latest advertising methods.

Ooh Advertising Out-of-home Advertising Boosts Impact Of Other Media, Delivers Sales Lift

Marketers looking for evidence that out-of-home advertising can improve sales and amplify the effectiveness of their other advertising need look no further than a new study from Clear Channel Communications and MarketShare Partners.

The study, “How Out-of-Home Advertising Works,” examines the return on investment of using out-of-home advertising as an ingredient in a larger marketing mix. Specifically, the report finds OOH advertising provides a significant, incremental sales lift that equals, or is often greater than, other drivers.

“After careful analysis of thousands of marketing optimization models, and considering decades of research and applied marketing science, independent research from MarketShare Partners conclusively shows that OOH is an effective marketing vehicle and should be included as a component of the optimal marketing mix across a broad range of industries,” said Debbie Reichig, senior vice president of Business Development and Marketing at Clear Channel Outdoor.

So what can marketers expect from OOH advertising? Quite a lot, actually. A press release announcing the report outlines some of key benefits, including:

*Adding OOH in the media mix, for industries and products where it provides observable sales lift, makes other media more effective.

*OOH can provide a significantly higher sales lift in conjunction with TV when the creative messaging is coordinated across platforms.

*OOH can provide a significantly higher sales lift in conjunction with radio when there is a call to action.

As I’ve discussed before, out-of-home advertising using a medium such as digital signage networks is making great strides these days. Recent developments in technologies and techniques to count audience elevate the stature of OOH advertising in the minds of marketers and ad agencies alike.

The latest study from Clear Channel Communications and MarketShare Partners advances the medium further still. It not only demonstrates how OOH ads can provide a sales lift when used together with radio and TV advertising, but it makes specific recommendations on the optimum allocation of marketing resources to out of home.

The study finds the best allocation of marketing dollars to OOH advertising falls somewhere between 5 percent and 25 percent of the total advertising budget for most products and brands.

While some may discount this study as self-serving -after all Clear Channel Communications recently announced its recommitment to OOH ad networks and is one of the largest purveyors of outdoor advertising in the world- to do so would be shortsighted in my opinion. Sure this company has an interest in OOH advertising, but both Clear Channel and MarketShare Partners have an equally strong interest in protecting their reputation in the industry. To do anything other than to look honestly and completely at OOH advertising in the report would be harmful to both enterprises.

I applaud the companies and the release of “How Out-of-Home Advertising Works.” The study offers the advertising and marketing communities key insights at this important stage in the development of OOH advertising on digital signage networks. Not only does the study demonstrate how OOH advertising can help marketers achieve their goals, it quantifies what portion of their ad budgets should be allocated to this medium to maximize the effectiveness of their advertising efforts.

Advertising Signs Solving The Problem of Bubbling or Outgassing

Advertising signs can often be seen to bubble and degrade over time with the result that the sign looks unprofessional. The sign then does not convey the right marketing message and creates a poor impression. This is mostly due to the problem of outgassing or the release of gases from the materials. By understanding the surface of the sign and the type of vinyl film being used you can avoid these problems and have a long lasting sign that is visually appealing.

Outgassing is a common problem when creating advertising signs. A typical scenario could be if you have an acrylic sign that is blistering or bubbling – acrylic suppliers claiming their acrylic doesn’t outgas and sign vinyl suppliers say that it isn’t their fault, the acrylic outgassed. It is a natural affect of the production process of many surfaces including plastics, paints, vinyl coverings, leather and PVCs to name a few.

An easy explanation is that a form of outgassing can be seen in motor vehicles. A new car can be left in the sun and you will find an oily residue build up on the windows and windscreen. This is a result of the release of gases from the vinyl material in the car being deposited onto glass surfaces.

As with most advertising sign creation, knowing the materials you are going to use and preparing the surfaces correctly will help you avoid any outgassing issues and achieve a quality result.

The surface or substrate you will be using is the first to be analysed. If the surface is old, then there is a good chance that any outgassing has finished. Newer surfaces such as the panels of a new motor vehicle, a sign in a foyer, display systems including portable display stands then your choice of vinyl material becomes most important. You can avoid outgassing issues by choosing a vinyl film that is porous enough to allow the gases to pass through. The following list of products is from most to least porosity:
Cast Vinyl

Polymeric Vinyl

Monomeric VinylFor each of these you should not have too many issues, however, quite often in the printing process you need to layer vinyl over each other to get the desired effect. Obviously, this will decrease the ability to release gas from under the vinyl. Care should still be taken therefore when layering.

Polyester and polypropylene films are not porous. The classic example of using these products is a sign with a mirror chrome finish on a black acrylic material. Even if the best quality products are used, it cannot be guaranteed that outgassing will not occur. Another example is where a gold or silver window film is put on a window. Unless the window has been thoroughly cleaned and dried when the window gets hot, the water trapped under the vinyl material will become gas and you will have a bubbling affect.

Whenever a sign is being developed, preparation is the key:
Firstly know the characteristics of the surface you are using, particularly as it relates to outgassing. Even painted surfaces may cause issues, particularly if using water based paints. You will need to allow them to cure properly, best over 7 days or more before applying any vinyl.

Secondly choose the most appropriate sign vinyl film for that surface, application and the time you want the sign to last. Often the cost is a determining factor of the type of film used. Cast film is the most expensive, but is also the most porous and is likely to have a longer life expectancy than other films. Your choice of film can be guided by how long you require the sign to last. However, the reality is that material costs are relatively insignificant in making a sign. The major cost is in the labour to create the sign. For example, if a Calendared vinyl contributes 10% of the total cost of the sign, using Cast vinyl will contribute about 5% more. The benefit is however a longer lasting sign and one that is unlikely to give you any issues with outgassing

Traditional Print Advertising vs Online Advertising

As fashions and other trends reflect looks and styles of times that some might prefer to forget, the term “everything old is new again” has never rung more true. This adage can also be used when marketing your business.

While it is true that the Internet has become easier and more accessible to marketers and advertisers, never underestimate the power of a well printed and well placed brochure, postcard or flyer. In fact, with many companies focusing their marketing online, print advertising has the advantage of remaining the “tried and true” method. In addition to including online marketing in your advertising budget, utilize the Internets search options to find an online printing company to affordably produce your full color brochures, advertising flyers and other print collateral to round out your marketing efforts.

Including traditional print marketing allows for a cross section of advertising on a variety of levels. For example, direct mail is an ideal, cost-effective way to target specific neighborhoods quickly and easily. Use flyer printing or postcard marketing to announce new services, special offers or grand openings. Postcard printing is easy and affordable and will ensure your name reaches your local area quickly and efficiently.

Full color brochures are an ideal follow-up for networking events, sales meetings and cold calls. Include brochure printing with your direct mail efforts to double your impact. Brochures and advertising flyers can be mailed directly to prospective or existing clients to further illustrate your products and services and drive sales. Consider using one panel as a registration or order form to round out your marketing push while also creating a multi-purpose collateral item.

Just as there are multiple levels of learning, so are there multiple levels and options in advertising. For example, a well-known performance group maintains a very consistent website, advertising upcoming shows and events. To advertise upcoming events, they utilize direct mail and postcard marketing. When attending local festivals or other public events, you will find full color brochures and advertising flyers on the table for patrons to review and keep. All of these efforts are enhanced by regular email newsletters and all print collateral drives traffic back to the website; definitely a case of one hand helping to feed the other.

Rather than sinking your entire marketing budget into Internet advertising, spread the wealth. You might be pleasantly surprised at the handsome return on your investment.
